Sometimes the reasons to take up assignments are not just the creative pursuits, but the emotions that accompany the process. When Monica wrote to me asking for a custom wedding invitation with a request to incorporate her late father’s last painting, it was reason enough for me to take up this project. Weddings are all about celebrating love with special people, and this gesture of Monika’s to have a part of father’s memory incorporated in her wedding invitation was heartwarming.
Her brief was to use the painting as a base for the illustration, but use my illustration style and a bright colour scheme. I started with the detailed illustration and then moved to making digital outlines which were then coloured. This invitation has three inserts for the three wedding functions. The main card with the illustration has a pocket at the back where the inserts can be placed.
We tried two different background colours, a dark green and a beige for the illustrations. Monica chose to go ahead with the lighter colour for the final card. The illustration was digitally produced and pasted on a custom matte red paper which has a gold foil border. The envelopes were made in two colours-red and orange to compliment the colour scheme of the invite.
Elements of the invite:
The suite includes the following elements
– Main card with illustration with a pocket at the back
– Three colour inserts with gold foiling
– Unprinted envelopes in two colours
The insert colours find their inspiration in the illustration– a bright red for the Wedding ceremony, a sunset orange for the Mehendi and a metallic turquoise blue for the Mandap Ropan ceremony. In order to make them look more coherent, we used gold foil to print all the text. These vibrant inserts were cut in different sizes so that all the colours show when they are placed in the card.
I feel so humbled to have designed this wedding invite. And what makes my work more satisfying is when the client has such warm feedback to share:
I wanted to take the opportunity to say thank you. Our invitations arrived in perfect condition and they look better than I ever expected. You captured everything I wanted perfectly, you were extremely patient with my constant emails and questions, and all the visuals you provided made me 100% sure before moving to the next step. I’m extremely grateful.
I can’t have my dad at my wedding but having his painting illustrated and incorporated as my wedding invite is something I will treasure always, it’s nice to have something which meant so much to him as part of my big day. If he was here with us, I know seeing this would have made him so happy – he loved painting, this was his last painting before he left us. I cant even explain how much these invites mean to me and I’m really looking forward to giving them out. I will definitely recommend you to friends and family. I’m so glad I found you.
